What We Do

Top Dressing

Top dressing, the practice of applying a thin layer of material over existing turf, plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy and resilient playing surfaces. This process, when implemented correctly, can significantly improve soil structure, drainage, and overall turf vigor. For maximum effectiveness, top dressing is best performed after aeration and screen dragging. Introducing fertilizer at the time of top dressing ensures that nutrients are readily available to the roots as they grow into the new soil layer.

Over Seeding

Broadcasting seed with a rotary spreader is a highly efficient method for overseeding large playing fields. This technique involves using a mechanical spreader that spins and disperses seed in a wide, even pattern, allowing for quick coverage of expansive areas. Overseeding is a crucial practice for maintaining dense and healthy turf. By introducing new seeds into an existing field, you're essentially bolstering the current stand of grass, filling in any thin or bare patches, and helping to create a more resilient and robust playing surface.

Aeration

Achieving a vibrant, healthy lawn hinges on two key factors: strong turf growth and robust root development. When grass blades flourish, they create a dense, visually appealing surface that is more resilient to stress from foot traffic, pests, and environmental changes. Simultaneously, a deep and extensive root system provides the foundation for this surface growth. Well-developed roots are crucial for accessing water and nutrients, making the lawn more drought-tolerant and less reliant on excessive fertilization.

SOD Installation

For our turf installations in Maine, we work with experienced local contractors to lay down either Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, or a custom blend of both. To ensure successful establishment of the sod, we strongly recommend applying a starter fertilizer to the soil prior to installation. This gives the new sod a crucial boost of nutrients, promoting healthy root development right from the start. Following installation, proper conditioning is vital; this primarily involves vigorous and consistent watering. This consistent hydration helps to encourage the roots to reach down into the soil and establish a firm, long-lasting foundation.

This practice is crucial for maintaining the true lines of the field, eliminating potentially hazardous lips, and ensuring fair play. To address unevenness and depressions, infield mix is strategically installed, filling low spots and creating a level base. A careful leveling process follows, utilizing a infield groomer and hand raking techniques to achieve a smooth, consistent surface. Finally, the application of materials like Turface is a vital step in optimizing the infield.

Infield Conditioner Application

Infield conditioners, like the popular Turface MVP, are vital tools for maintaining the playability and aesthetic appeal of baseball and softball fields. These pelletized clay products are specifically designed to manage moisture, a critical factor in ensuring a safe and consistent playing surface. By absorbing excess water during wet conditions and releasing it slowly during dry periods, conditioners help prevent the formation of slick, muddy spots or hard, dusty surfaces. The flexibility of application, either as a top dressing or integrated directly into the infield mix, allows groundskeepers to tailor their approach to the specific needs of their field and local climate.

Base, Plate and Rubber Installation

Our expertise extends to the meticulous installation of essential baseball and softball field components. We handle the precise placement of home plates, pitching rubbers, and bases, ensuring they're anchored securely with robust systems designed for long-term use. Beyond new installations, we provide a crucial service in infield maintenance. As part of our standard cleanup, we carefully check the existing measurements of your field, identifying any deviations from official dimensions. We then skillfully adjust and reposition any errant bases, anchors, and pitching rubbers, ensuring the field is brought back into true alignment, providing a fair and accurate playing surface for every game.

Mound Cleanup or Renovation

Mound cleanup is a regular, ongoing task focusing on the surface and immediate surroundings. It entails removing any unwanted vegetation, ensuring a clear and consistent pitching surface. This also includes addressing wear and tear by adding clay to fill any holes or depressions, particularly those that tend to form directly in front of the pitching rubber and in the landing area. Furthermore, cleanup involves reshaping the plateau, the flat area where the pitcher stands, and trimming the edges to maintain a proper circular shape, contributing to a consistent pitching experience. In contrast, mound renovation is a more significant undertaking, requiring the complete removal of the existing mound structure. This is followed by the careful installation and shaping of new, high-quality native clay, forming the base for a fresh and structurally sound pitching mound. This deeper level of intervention is needed when the mound's underlying structure has deteriorated significantly and a basic cleanup is no longer sufficient.
